Identifying Adult Sleep Problems

All those tossing and turning in bed even after counting hundreds of sheep may signal some kind of adult sleep problem. Although stress may be the number one cause, there are other factors that contribute in keeping adults from getting that elusive sleep.

Adult sleep problems range from simple to severe. Proper diagnosis will reveal whether treatment can be just a modification in ones lifestyle or require some medical attention. The key is to identify and accept the existence of adult sleep problems and take the necessary steps to cure them. Sleep Hygiene: Sleeping Habits and the Adult Sleep Problem

The simplest yet oft neglected part of inducing one to sleep is to have the proper sleeping habits. This is referred to as Sleep Hygiene -- the preparation and maintenance of habits. Fifteen hours of sleep every other day amidst a chaotic environment will obviously deprive you of the much needed rest. Adults should bear in mind that setting limits for sleep, adherence to a regular schedule and proper stimulation all contribute to a deep slumber. Also refrain from taking alcohol or caffeine as these give adverse effects. You want to be relaxed and not be all hyped up and perky.

Insomnia: The Common Adult Sleep Problem

The most commonly known adult sleep problem affecting about 12 percent of the American population is insomnia. People who have problems sleeping well at night are called insomniacs. This adult sleeping disorder has two classifications depending on how long one suffers from it. Situational insomnia affects the body for a shorter period of time, usually within a day or two, due to some changes in daily activities. People who travel across time zones usually experience this. Chronic insomnia lasts longer, perhaps a month or more. Insomnia can usually be corrected with some cognitive behavioral treatment.

Sleep Apnea: The Most Dangerous Sleep Problem

Sleep apnea is the most dangerous, albeit, generally harmless, adult sleep problem. Dangerous yet harmless? It is contradicting but true. Sufferers of sleep apnea experience difficulty in the breathing process while sleeping. To counteract this, the brain signals the body to force air through the blockage, thus creating loud and at times irritating sounds which we know as snoring. Also, because of the noise created, adults experiencing this sleep problem are literally awakened by people around them. Once awake even for a few seconds, breathing returns to normal. Sleep centers in the United States list sufferers of this adult sleep problem as the number one reason for patients seeking their services.
