Sleep Disorder InformationBruxism Bruxism is a sleeping disorder that involves a grinding or chewing of teeth. Due to some misinformation about this illness, this is most of the time wrongly classified as a habit. During sleep, the brain becomes inactive. In bruxism there is continued reflex action. The repeated grinding and chewing action causes damage to the teeth, creating cracks and fractures. Sufferers are usually not aware until there is a significant damage to the teeth that may cause tooth loss. Sleep Apnea Sleep Apnea is characterized by pauses in breathing while a person is asleep. A person with sleep apnea is not aware of this condition. Those surrounding him who witness such occurrence are the ones greatly affected. The person with this disorder will still complain of a general feeling of sleepiness even after resting for a long period of time. There is also a temporary type of sleep apnea known as obstructive sleep apnea. These are caused by medical condition such as upper respiratory infection, swelling of the throat or enlarged tonsils. Narcolepsy Narcolepsy is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness even after adequate night time sleep. Symptoms of narcolepsy are: cataplexy, sleep paralysis, hypnagogic hallucinations and automatic behavior. |
